The first issue of Photonics Research was published in June 2013. The first article was authored by Prof. David A.B. Miller from Stanford University. It was cited by high-impact articles in Science, Nature, Nature Photonics, Nature Nanotechnology, etc.

The 1st Editorial Board Meeting was held in March 2014 in Shanghai, China. Attended editors: Zhiping (James) Zhou, Hon Ki Tsang, Claire Gu, Ching-Fuh Lin, Xianfeng Chen, Yun-Feng Xiao, Yikai Su, Zhengyuan Xu, Daoxin Dai, and Jun Wang. Special guest: David A.D. Miller.

The article “ Self-configuring universal linear optical component ” was awarded as the 2013 EIC Choice Awarded paper. Zhiping (James) Zhou, EIC of Photonics Research was presenting the certificate to David A.D. Miller, the author.

The article “ Generation of arbitrary vector vortex beams on hybrid-order Poincaré sphere ” was awarded as the 2017 EIC Choice Awarded paper. Zhiping (James) Zhou, EIC of Photonics Research was presenting the certificate to Zhenxing Liu, the first author.

The hybrid Photonics Research Workshop: Next-Generation Silicon Photonocs was held in Beijing, China in October 2020. It was co-organized by Daoxin Dai, Po Dong, Yikai Su, and Dries Van Thourhout. The 2nd interview for a Photonics Research webinar series took place on 29 November 2022. The conversation is between Prof. John Bowers (University of California, Santa Barbara), a renowned expert in integrated photonics, and one of his former students, Prof. Lin Chang (Peking University).

The hybrid Photonics Research Workshop: Integrated Photonics was held in Xi’an, China in August 2022. It was co- organized by Qinghai Song, Liang Feng, Xuetao Gan and Wenfu Zhang.

The articles “ Actively logical modulation of MEMS-based terahertz metamaterial ” and “1.3 GHz E-O bandwidth GaN-based micro-LED for multi-gigabit visible light communication” were awarded as the 2021 EIC Choice Awarded papers. Kebin Shi, Associate Editor of Photonics Research was presenting the certificate to Yu-Sheng Lin, the corresponding author of the first article.
