The effect of laser shock processing on the microstructure, hardness and residual stress of an austenitic steel 1Cr18Ni9Ti and a Ni-base superalloy GH30 is studied as a functions of laser shock processing variables. Results show that high density of dislocations and deformation twins are produced in the laser shock processed zone of both the austenitic steel 1Cr18Ni9Ti and the nickel-based superalloy GH30. Extensive strain-induced martensite plates are also observed in the laser shock processed zone of the austenitic steel surface. The hardness and compressive stress of the laser shock processed surface are significantly increased for both of the test materials..

A high power, narrow linewidth single frequency laser diode as one of the key elements of Integrated Optical Rotation Sensor (IORS) is studied. Both theoretical analysis and experimental research show that in order to achieve 1°/h resolution for rotation sensing, a strong optical feedback fiber Bragg grating laser diode (FBG-LD) with linewidth less than 1 MHz is selected as a light source of IORS. The characteristics of FBG-LD with strong optical feedback is analyzed for ensuring high power, single longitudinal mode, and narrow linewidth operation. Especially, the influence of the residual reflectivity of the feedback face on the power of FBG-LD is presented, and the effect of the coupling efficiency to the linewidth of FBG-LD is emphasized in this paper. A high power, narrow linewidth single frequency FBG-LD is designed and developed. Furthermore, the FBG-LD is applied in the experimental setup of IORS.
