Based on solving the coupled mode equation with coupling coefficients as functions of longitudinal distance, single-mode fiber couplers with variable spacing are introduced and their coupling characteristics discussed. We reach the conclusion that grade seperation couplers have optimum bandwidth after calculating various insertion losses. The method for realizing broad spectral bandwidth single-mode fiber couplers and the related design procedure are also proposed.
