Fluorescence decay curves of Rh6G with different concentrations of KI in water were measured by using a photomultipler tube and a sampling oscilloscope. The response time of the system was in the order of nanoseconds. The observed fluorescence decay curves were convolutional results of the real decay curves and the instrumental response curve. A combination of the phase plane method and iterative convolution method was used in making deconvolution to obtain the real fluorescence lifetimes. The minimum time resolution was found to be 130 picoseconds, that is, 3% of the FWHM of the instrumental response time..

A new kind of interferometer-Fresnel zone plate interferometer-is described. It combines the advantages of both radial and lateral shearing interferometers, and thus simplifies the analysis of interferograms. This interferometer is a commonpath system. It can be used in the wavefront diagnosis of broad-band lasers and short pulse lasers. Properties of the interferometer are discussed and experimental results in laser wavefront diagnostics summarized..

This paper deals with the two-dimensional Hartmann quantitative test of the largest hyperboloidal primary mirror made in China. It is the first of its kind carried out in this country. It provides geometrical energy concentration, spot diagram at best focus, contour map for the mirror and aberration coefficients of Zernike polynomial fitting wavefront. In addition, parameters of the real shape, i.e., real radius of its curvature (R) and function of eccentricity of a conic surface (e2) are given..

A slab laser can reduce the effect of thermal-optical distortions due to its intrinsic phase-conjugate properties. It is hence a good laser structure. A rod laser with its side surface polished has Similar properties, because it has a special kind of resonator with side reflectors. Modes of such resonator are analyzed in this paper. The analytic results show that diffraction losses become smaller, and mode distributions become stronger in the central part of the end reflectors..

The relaxation oscillation of the amplified spontaneous radiation pulses emitted from a single-mirror Cu/CuBr laser has been observed for the first time and the experimental characteristics of the relexation oscillation were obtained. In addition, the spatial and temporal distributions of the light pulse intensity of the amplified spontaneous radiation were also measured and found to be oomparativel yuniform. The spatial coherence of the amplified spontaneous radiation was found to be better than that of the laser with the same lasant..

Long-term stable operations of XeCl exoimer lasers depend considerably on the depletion of HCl. Our experiments have shown that the lifetime of such device can be extended significantly by adding appropriate amount of cheap donor gas HCl into the laser chamber made of epoxy resin pipe. In this way, more than 1.3×106 pulses were obtained by once filling Xe and Ar and then replenishing HCl at several appropriate times. For a repetition rate of 5.3 pulses per second and single-pulse energy of 100 mJ the laser was still able to operate normaly after working continuously for 54 hours. The maximum single-pulse energy of the laser was 160 mJ. The influence of the content of HOI on the output characteristics of the laser was also studied..

Light diffraction patterns from LiKSO4 single crystals and their changes with temperature were observed. These crystals were also observed under an optical microscope. It is concluded that the optical phenomena described in Reference [1] are caused by optical twins which are arranged in phase gratings with wave vectors perpendicular to c axis in LiKSO4. Diffraction patterns show abrupt changes at 435℃, -73℃ and -84℃, caused by structural phase transitions at these temperatures..

We have used a method for making off-axis paraboloidal mirrors by means of elastic deformation. The principle is that after applying an appropriate set of forces to a mirror blank, the polishing process can remove the forces and make the surface deform elastioally into the desired off-axis paraboloid. We have made calculations of the stress and deformation for an off-axis Section of a paraboloid and have designed the special jig for applying the force with bars and springs. The experimental results are satisfactory, with a maximum surface deviation from the dsired surface of 1/4λ(λ=0.6328 μm) and a rms error of 1/15λ..

Based on solving the coupled mode equation with coupling coefficients as functions of longitudinal distance, single-mode fiber couplers with variable spacing are introduced and their coupling characteristics discussed. We reach the conclusion that grade seperation couplers have optimum bandwidth after calculating various insertion losses. The method for realizing broad spectral bandwidth single-mode fiber couplers and the related design procedure are also proposed..

The encoded film is transformed into a phaseencoded transparency, then it ig put on the input-plane of a white-light processor, and the density pseudocolor image is obtained on the output-plane by spatial filtering of the Fourier spectrum. The theoretical explanation of this method has been made and it is in conformity with the experiments. This method has been used in the processing of the films of astronomy, remote-sensing, biology, and medicine, and good results have Toeen obtained..

Beat lengths of single-mode fibers were measured by determining the output polarization ellipticity εc of a circularly polarized beam of light incident on the twisted single-mode fiber diode laser and a 1.34μm Nd:YAP laser were used as monochromatic light sources. The advantage of this method is that preliminary determination of the position of the major polarization axis is not needed and calculations of beat lengths become very simple..

Emission spectra of the a 1Δg(v=1)→X3Σg-(v=0) transition of the singlet molecular oxygen 1O2 produced by hematoporphrin(HP) in solutions of water, acetone and ethylalcohol were measured with Ar+ laser as the pumping light source. The relative phosphorescence intensity (relative value of the 1O2 quantum yield) was found to depend on the pumping power, concentration of HP and pumping light wavelength. The quenching effect of ascorbic acid (injected as a quencher) on the singlet molecular oxygen was observed..
