Sydor Technologies Receives Grant for Developing Plasma-Electrode Pockels Cells for Inertial Fusion Facilities

Rochester-based Sydor Technologies has been awarded a $200,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to work with the LLE to assess the commercial feasibility of the mid-scale plasma-electrode Pockels Cell (mPEPC) system developed at LLE. This mPEPC technology enables high-power, high-energy modular lasers that could be deployed at national laboratories and companies to advance inertial fusion energy and high-energy-density science research. Transferring the mPEPC technology to industry aligns exactly with the aims of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engines Development Award presented earlier this year to the University of Rochester. This planning grant project will bring together a variety of institutional, industrial, and business partners to lay the groundwork for establishing an innovation and economic hub built around the Science, Technology, and Engineering of Lasers and Laser Applications Research (STELLAR).
