    Abstract

A theoretical model of wavelength conversion based on cross-gain saturation in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has been established. The wavelength conversion characteristics under the small-signal modulation and the converted waveform distortion under the large-signal modulation are discussed respectively. The results show that the SOA carrier lifetime is the main factor that produces converted waveform distortion.
