In this paper, the status of the art of optics and applied optics in China are reviewed including lasers, infrared and opto-electronical techniques, optical metrology, high-speed photography, holography and information processing, nonlinear optics, optical fibre communication and optical techniques. The issues for further development of optics and applied optics in China are proposed.
