    Abstract

A new circular hole pattern electrode liquid crystal (LC) lens was proposed, which used the polyimide film to replace the glass as an isolation layer. This LC lens has a 2mm clear aperture, and it can operate at as low as 1.1Vrms controlled voltage. A model, for which the explanation of LC lens was different from the traditional one, was proposed by combining geometrical optics with the theory of LC. Then the theoretical formulas of focal length and phase retardation were obtained. The focal length is from 20mm to 480mm tested in the range from 1.1Vrms to 20Vrms the value of which is close to the theoretical value. The modulation transfer function of LC lens was also studied. It is found that the imaging characteristics are proportional to the controlled voltage. As the voltage increases, the imaging characteristics also enhance.
