    Abstract

The 2D Simultaneous Multiple Surfaces (SMS) design can realize the goal of palindrome lighting. But it can’t realize the goal of lighting without rotational symmetry, such as rectangular beam desires. Thus, a 3D SMS method is introduced to optimize the LED lighting. A design example is presented to further verify the 3D SMS method, and a different rectangular illumination is produced by changing a different seed rib. The model of the freeform lens is constructed and the optical simulation is carried out. The results show that the light beams are controlled well by the 3D SMS method, the freeform lens is compact and efficient, and a target illumination without rotational symmetry is achieved.
