Photonic crystals are a new kind of materials with photonic bandgap, their unique physical features bring about a number of theory research and wide application prospect. The basical conception of photonic crystals and fabrication methods of three dimensional photonic crystals are introduced, and some characters and applications in optics, communications and microwave etc are summarized.
