Special Issue on Optical Microresonators

Optical microresonators have been one of the most active and exciting research topics in the photonics community in recent years. By confining light in both spatial and time domain, optical microresonators serve as an indispensable platform for significantly enhancing light–matter interaction and controlling light fields at the micro- and nano-scale. These capabilities make optical microresonators important tools for a wide range of applications, including sensing, metrology, communication, and quantum computing.

 

In the past five years, the research interests of optical microresonators have rapidly expanded and combined with other emerging disciplines. For example, optical chaos in deformed microresonators has stimulated the investigations of open systems and applications for directional emission and low-threshold microlasers. The introduction of gain/loss or non-reciprocal coupling in optical microresonators enables a versatile platform for the exploration of non-Hermitian physics. In addition, the development of new materials and fabrication techniques has enabled the creation of optical microresonators with novel properties and capabilities, such as on-chip quantum photon sources, electric-optic modulators, and elastic/wearable functional devices.

 

This special issue in Photonics Research aims to publish high-impact research on optical microresonators in order to share new findings and advances with the broader photonics community. These papers may cover emerging technologies and cutting-edge research in this field, and may include results and innovative approaches related to fundamental physics and various applications, such as nonlinear, symmetry breaking, or quantum photonic systems. The goal of the issue is to advance our understanding of microresonator photonics and drive further innovation and development in this area.

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal.
