Measurements of aerosol distribution by an elastic-backscatter lidar in summer 2008 in Beijing

Elastic lidar observations of profiles of the aerosol extinction, backscattering coefficients, and the lidar ratio have been performed in Beijing. The elastic lidar transmitts wavelengths of 532 and 355 nm. The measurement altitude can reach up to 6 km. The detected boundary layer also agrees well with the high and stable ozone concentration obtained from the differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) system..

New method for calibration of sun photometers

Speckle analysis in laser scanning display system

The theory of speckle formation in laser scanning display system is established based on the averaging effect of eye response as laser beam scanning through an eye resolution spot. Validity condition of separating dispersion of PCFs into material dispersion and geometrical dispersion

When using normalized dispersion method for the dispersion design of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), it is vital that the group velocity dispersion of PCF can be seen as the sum of geometrical dispersion and material dispersion. However, the error induced by this way of calculation will deteriorate the final results. Study of mode propagation with 632.8-nm laser in tapered fiber

Theoretical and experimental investigation of the mode-spacing of fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot cavity

The mode-spacing of the fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot (FBG F-P) cavity is calculated by using the effective cavity length which contains the effective length of the FBG. A novel accelerometer based on microring resonator

A novel microring resonator accelerometer is proposed. It is realized by a suspended straight waveguide coupled with a microring resonator. Under the external acceleration, the coupling coefficient is a function of gap spacing between the two waveguides. The mathematical model of the sensing element is established. A passively Q-switched side-pumped laser with folded resonator is specially constructed for singlelongitudinal-mode smooth pulse output. Nd:YAG is chosen as the laser active medium and Cr<sup>4+</sup>:YAG as the saturable absorber medium. The probability of single-frequency laser output measured is over 99% by using the methods of Fourier analysis and F-P etalon multiple-beam interferometry at the threshold voltage. The measured near-field and far-field angles of divergence are 1.442 and 1.315 mrad, respectively. The values of M<sup>2</sup> are 1.32 and 1.31 separately with the knife-edge method. 20-kHz watt-level green laser with LGS crystal electro-optic Q-switch

589-nm yellow laser generation by intra-cavity sum-frequency mixing in a T-shaped Nd:YAG laser cavity

To obtain high power 589-nm yellow laser, a T-shaped thermal-insensitive cavity is designed. The optimal power ratio of 1064- and 1319-nm beams is considered and the fundamental spot size distribution from the output mirror to the two laser rods are calculated and simulated, respectively. SiO<sub>2</sub> thin films containing Si<sub>1-x</sub>Ge<sub>x</sub> quantum dots (QDs) are prepared by ion implantation and annealing treatment. The photoluminescence (PL) and microstructural properties of thin films are investigated. SiO<sub>2</sub> thin films containing Si<sub>1-x</sub>Ge<sub>x</sub> quantum dots (QDs) are prepared by ion implantation and annealing treatment. The samples exhibit strong PL in the wavelength range of 400?470 nm and relatively weak PL peaks at 730 and 780 nm at room temperature. Blue shift is found for the 400-nm PL peak, and the intensity increases initially and then decreases with the increase of Ge-doping dose. We propose that the 400?470 nm PL band originates from multiple luminescence centers, and the 730- and 780-nm PL peaks are ascribed to the Si=O and GeO luminescence centers..

Fenestration operation in middle ear bone with pulsed infrared lasers: an in-vivo study

Evolutions of matter-wave bright soliton with spatially modulated nonlinearity

Correlation function of an optical bistable system with cross-correlated additive white noise and multiplicative colored noise

Considering an optical bistable system with cross-correlated additive white noise and multiplicative colored noise, we study the effects of correlation between the noises on the correlation function C(s) using the unified colored noise approximation and the Stratonovich decoupling ansatz formalism. Analyzing and tailoring spectra of arbitrary microring resonator arrays based on six transfer cells and simulated annealing algorithm

A simple approach based on six transfer cells and simulated annealing algorithm for analyzing and tailoring the spectra of arbitrary microring resonator arrays is presented. Coupling coefficients, ring sizes, and waveguide lengths of microring resonator arrays can be arbitrary in this approach. Large negative Goos-H nchen shift from a wedge-shaped thin film

The analytical expression for the complex amplitude of light reflected from a wedge-shaped thin film is derived. Based on the calibration mechanism, the stability of the fractal dimension is analyzed. Theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that the fractal dimension obtained by the intersection point calibration method is stable, while that calibrated by the Gauss-Newton method is instable, which only describes the shape characteristic of a small sample. Czerny-Turner imaging spectrometer for broadband spectral simultaneity

Plasma channel formed by ultraviolet laser pulses at 193 nm in air

The propagation of picosecond deep ultraviolet laser pulse at wavelength of 193 nm in air is numerically investigated. Long plasma channel can be formed due to the competition between Kerr self-focusing and ionization induced defocusing. The fluctuation of laser intensity and electron density inside ultraviolet (UV) plasma channel is significantly lower than that of infrared pulse. The linear absorption of UV laser by air is considered in the simulation and it is shown that the linear absorption is important for the limit of the length of plasma channel..

Color appearance and visual measurements for color samples with gloss effect

We assess the color appearance of the samples with different inks on glossy substrates, five kinds of paper with different gloss levels. The color samples are measured using spectrophotometers under different illuminating/viewing geometries and visually estimated using the psychophysical method of magnitude estimation.We assess the color appearance of the samples with different inks on glossy substrates, five kinds of paper with different gloss levels. The experimental data analysis indicates that the 0/45 and 15/0 geometries can be used to describe the two major aspects of gloss effect, the enlargement of color gamut, and the reduction of lightness. The agreement for hue attribute between instrumental measurement and visual assessment is better than those for colorfulness and lightness..

A novel composite model is put forward for humidity-sensitive material based on Maxwell-Garnett and effective medium theory. The analytical expression of the relation between effective refractive index and relative humidity is shown with different absorption factors and porosities. In comparison with the experimental humidity-sensing curve by the method of p-polarized reflectance and the analysis of mechanism, theoretical simulation is in agreement with experimental results. Stopping and storing light pulses within a fiber optic ring resonator

The system consists of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and a fiber ring resonator. Method to improve the performance of reflectance diffuse optical imaging based on polygonal optical fibers arrangement

Polynomial geometry is based on the hexagonal geometry (HG) and multicentered double-density (MD) mode.
