Five types of grating substructure including quarter wavelength shift, multiple quarter wavelength shift, tapped effective refractive index, tapped coupling coefficient and “stitching” are numerically analyzed using the transfer matrix method. The numerical results agree well with the author′s experimental results and other published results. By a systematic investigation of five substructures with different parameters, some new applications of fiber Bragg gratings are proposed..

An real time and in situ fixing method by heating with a CO 2 laser beam is suggested to thermally fix a small local hologram in a bulk of Fe:LiNbO 3 photorefractive crystal. To form a heating up to 100 ̄200℃ volume with the shape similar to the heat transfer equations, different heating modes with or without metal absorbers for heat guiding by using a continuos or pulsed laser beam are analyzed. The optimal mode may be the case of pulsed heating with absorbers. On this basis, experiments are designed and demonstrated. It is shown that the fixing process by CO 2 laser beam is very short compared with the process by oven, and the fixing efficiency is high..

The interaction between high intensity ultrashort laser and underdense plasma is numerically studied by using a particle in cell simulation. The results show that wake waves and Raman waves are excited in the plasma after the interaction between high intensity ultrashort laser and underdense plasma, the wavelength and frequency are conformed with theory. In the meantime under the action of waves, part of electrons in the plasma are accelerated to very high velocity, even near to the light velocity..

Zn 1-x Mn x Se / ZnSe strained layer sperlattices are grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(100) substrates and characterized by X ray diffraction and low temperature photoluminescence. The main emission peaks in photoluminescence spectra can be attributed to the free exciton between the lowest electron subband and ground light hole subband of the ZnSe well. For the case where the total thickness of a Zn 1-x Mn x Se / ZnSe superlattice is well bellow the critical value, the structure grows pseudomorphically to the buffer layer. The ZnSe well layer is free of strain and the Zn 1-x Mn x Se layer is under compressive strain. A blue shift of 6 meV of the excitonic peak is observed and has been explained by the carrier confinement effect only. For the case of a Zn 1-x Mn x Se / ZnSe superlattice with a thickness larger than its critical values, we show that it can be treated as free standing with ZnSe under tension and Zn 1-xMnxSe under compression. The strain present can overwhelm the quantum cofinement to produce a net red shift of 2 meV of the near band-edge feature. The energy shifts due to the strain and quantum confinement are calculated on the basis of deformation potential theory and Bastard's method, showing good agreement with the experimental results..

Correlations Between Photo-Induced Bleaching and Temporal Stability on Optical Nonlinear Langmuir-Blodgett Films

We investigated the stability of LB multilayers of three organic dyes, diazostilbenes (HPNA), phenylhydrazone (PD) and hemicyanine (DAEP), which all have large hyperpolarizability β but different double bonds in their conjugated π electron systems (N=N in HPNA, C=N in PD and C=C in DAEP). It was found that the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensities from those samples reduced significantly within a few tens of days. On the other hand, the Raman intensities from the powder samples of the three dyes due to the stretching modes of the double bonds and the UV vis absorption band from the LB multilayers of the three dyes corresponding to the original chromophores also decreased with increasing time of UV irradiation, confirming the breakdown (cleavage) of the double bonds (photo induced bleaching) in all the three dyes. The SHG, UV vis absorption and Raman experiments deduced the same sequence of stability: N=N the worst and C=C the best, suggesting that photo induced bleaching effect, instead of deterioration of the film frameworks, could possibly be responcible for the instability of the optical nonlinear LB films..

An improved formula for division of optical power in an achromatic hybrid refractive diffractive singlet with small field of view is presented as the diffractive optical element (DOE) is used to correct both axial chromatic and spherical aberrations. The examples show that using the revised formula one can get a better original configuration without the siganificant level of spherichromatism aberration introduced by the aspheric term of DOE for correcting the spherical aberration. The correctness and effectiveness of the formula have been proven. This formula is also useful in designing other hybrid optical systems..

A novel grating device composed of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film and a periodic striped electrode structure has been demonstrated. Due to PDLC electrooptical properties, this grating can cause scattering or diffraction of an incident light dependent upon the applied voltage. i.e. it is adjustable by electric field. Results show that when the applied voltage is higher than its threshold voltage, both diffraction light intensities and visible orders can be controlled electrically. Moreover, the linear polarization state of the incident light can be changed into an elliptical polarization state..

The mass selected MPI spectra and time of flight mass spectra of acetone in the region of three photon resonant with 3d and 4s Rydberg states were obtained using multiphoton ionization time of flight mass spectrometric technique. Two relative strong ion peaks were assigned to CH 3CO + and CH + 3, and weak ion peaks assigned to C +, CH +, CH + 2, CHO +, no parent ion peak was observed in the wavelength region. Mass selected MPI spectra of these main cations exhibited the same feature, could be attributed to (n 0, 3d) and (n 0, 4s) Rydberg transitions. We also measured the dependence of fragmental ratio of each ions on laser intensity and laser power index of total ions. Based on the experimental results, the multiphoton ionization dissociation mechanics of acetone was discussed. The MPI of molecular ions model was analyzed with rate equations. Using simple three energy system model, we also estimated three photon absorption cross section of n 0→3d Rydberg transition of acetone..

The reflection of the crystalline film is 50% at 780 nm, and the difference of the reflection and reflectivity index is very large in the range of 600 nm to 900 nm, which shows the profitable characteristics as the recording layer for high reflection CD E system. The film also shows good recording properties at short wavelength (514.5 nm). A high reflectivity, larger than 15%, can be obtained with low power (11.5 mW) and short width (300 ns) laser beam..
